Redact Sensitive Information From PDF Pages by Drawing Black Boxes Over Confidential Content

Before sharing PDFs containing sensitive information, you need to remove that information visually. Social security numbers, credit card numbers, medical information, names, addresses, and other private data must be obscured. This tool lets you redact sensitive areas by drawing black boxes directly over the content in your browser, then download the modified PDF. Perfect for privacy protection before document sharing.

When You Need to Redact PDFs

Legal Discovery and Litigation: Redact private information from documents being shared with opposing counsel. Names, addresses, and sensitive details must be hidden while relevant content remains visible.

Medical and Healthcare Records: Redact patient names, medical record numbers, addresses, and other PHI (Protected Health Information) from documents shared with patients, providers, or insurers. HIPAA requires protecting patient privacy.

Financial and Tax Documentation: Redact social security numbers, credit card numbers, account numbers, and salary information from documents shared with contractors, accountants, or third parties.

HR and Personnel Files: Redact salaries, performance evaluations, and personal information from employment documents before sharing with anyone outside human resources.

Academic and Research Work: Redact names, identification numbers, and personal information from student records, research data, or study participant information before publication or sharing.

Government and Security Documents: Redact classified information, security numbers, and sensitive details from government or military documents before declassification or sharing.

Customer and Vendor Documentation: Redact competitor pricing, customer lists, vendor details, and proprietary information from documents before sharing with parties who don't need that information.

Interactive Redaction Drawing

Page-by-Page Selection: Click page thumbnails to select which page to redact. The preview shows the current page at readable size.

Click and Drag Redaction: Simply click and drag to draw black boxes over sensitive content. The black rectangle overlays the content, hiding it from view. Draw multiple boxes on the same page as needed.

Clear and Undo: Clear individual pages to start over or undo individual redactions before applying them. Preview your redactions before downloading.

Visual Confirmation: See redaction boxes applied in real-time. Verify that all sensitive information is hidden before downloading your redacted PDF.

Important Technical Limitation

Visual Overlay Only: This tool draws black boxes visually on top of PDF content. The underlying text data in the PDF structure remains unchanged. If someone extracts text from the PDF or removes the visual overlay, the underlying data is still present.

For documents requiring legally-binding, forensically-sound redaction (legal discovery, government documents, classified materials), you need specialized redaction software that permanently removes the underlying data, not just overlays visual boxes. This tool works for general privacy protection when sharing documents, but not for legally-critical redaction.

Real-World Redaction Use Cases

HR Document Sharing: An employment termination letter contains salary information and performance details. Redact the salary and performance details to share with the employee's new employer or insurance company without exposing compensation details.

Medical Record Sharing: A patient's complete medical record spans 10 pages, but the specialist only needs the diagnostic test results and scan images. Redact patient identifiers and unrelated medical history before sending to the specialist.

Financial Document Sharing: A loan application contains personal financial information. Redact your address, phone number, and detailed account numbers before sending to the loan servicer.

Academic Paper Preparation: Research data contains participant identifiers. Redact participant names and identifying information before publishing the research while maintaining statistical data.

Legal Document Discovery: A 500-page document collection contains sensitive information about uninvolved parties. Redact their names, contact information, and personal details while sharing relevant content with the legal other side.

Real Estate Document Sharing: A property purchase agreement contains the seller's and buyer's personal information. Redact their addresses and identifying information before posting publicly, keeping only property-related details visible.

Vendor Quote Sharing: A vendor quote contains their standard pricing and terms. Redact competitor pricing and your internal margin calculations before sharing with your team.

Complete Privacy and Browser Processing

All redaction happens 100% in your browser. Your PDF never uploads to any server or reaches any third party. Processing is instant. Your file is not retained after download. Work with any documents—sensitive, confidential, or private—knowing everything remains completely private.

Redaction Best Practices

Verify Redactions: After drawing redaction boxes, carefully review the page to ensure all sensitive information is covered. Missed redactions could expose private data.

Cover Completely: Ensure redaction boxes completely cover sensitive information. Partial redactions that leave information visible defeat the purpose.

Test Before Sharing: After downloading your redacted PDF, open it to verify the redactions appear correctly. Different PDF readers might display redactions slightly differently.

Consider Legally-Critical Documents: For documents requiring forensic redaction (legal discovery, government documents), use specialized redaction software that permanently removes data, not just overlays visual boxes.

Distribute Carefully: Even with redactions, handle and distribute documents carefully. Apply principle of least privilege—share with only the people who need the information.
