Why only DST and EXP as output

Most embroidery-format "converters" quietly guess at fields they do not fully understand. This one does not: it can write only Tajima DST and Melco EXP, because those are the two formats whose record layout is simple and well-documented enough to re-encode correctly. Janome JEF and Brother PES/PEC carry header fields — hoop codes, thumbnail blocks, version-specific metadata — that are not documented precisely enough to round-trip safely, so this tool never offers them as a conversion target. It reads all five: DST, EXP, JEF, PES and PEC.

What actually happens

The source file is decoded into stitch positions, jumps, trims and colour changes, then re-encoded as DST or EXP records. Converting between DST and EXP is a clean, lossless re-encode of the same stitch path — nothing is approximated.

Converting from JEF or PES/PEC loses colour information on the way out: those formats carry a palette (thread names and RGB), but DST and EXP carry none at all. The tool shows this plainly before you download, rather than silently dropping it.
