How the estimate is built

For every stitch segment in the file — needle down, move, needle down again — this measures the real distance in millimetres and adds it up per colour block. That is the actual path the needle thread travels sewing the design, not stitch count multiplied by an assumed average length, which can be badly wrong for a design that mixes fine detail with long fills.

Why there is a multiplier

The flat sewn path is not the whole story: every stitch also consumes thread in the interlace with the bobbin thread, in tension take-up, and at trims. How much extra depends on the machine, the tension setting and the fabric — there is no single correct number. Rather than bury an assumption, this tool exposes it as an adjustable take-up multiplier, defaulting to 1.5× the raw path length, which is a commonly used rule-of-thumb starting point for machine embroidery. Drag it to match your own machine's real consumption once you know it.

What you get

A length estimate for every colour, shown in metres, plus the design's overall total — useful for checking whether a cone of thread will make it through a run, or for costing a job before you sew it.

The honest limits

This is an estimate, not a measurement. Real consumption varies with fabric stabiliser, stitch type (satin vs. fill pulls thread differently) and machine tension in ways no file format records. Treat the number as a planning figure, not a guarantee.
